May Day (or ‘Obby ‘Oss Day as it is known outside of Padstow) is the biggest day in Padstow’s calendar, it takes place annually on 1st May (2nd May if the 1st falls on a Sunday). There have been many conflicting theories about the origins of the Obby Oss. Some say its roots are in pagan times, others that it’s a rain maker or a fertility symbol. The Obby Oss proceeds through Padstow’s streets, swirling and dancing and accompanied by a Teazer, who leads the dance with theatrical movements and the use of the Teazer’s club, a leather pad colourfully painted and mounted on the end of a wooden rod. The Teazer’s accompanying retinue are dressed in white their costumes decorated with blue or red ribbons and sprays of cowlips and bluebells. As the procession moves around the town dancing to the sound of the accompanying accordion’s and drummers. Last, but not least, are the followers, young and old who follow the procession every year and join in the singing of the traditional May Song

Today is St Piran’s Day, the national day of Cornwall, it’s held on the 5^th of March every year. St Piran was the patron saint of tin miners, so he must have been very busy, the miners used it as a day’s holiday and we still use his flag, the white cross on a black background, as the Cornish flag today.

Why not come and visit us at Yellow Sands Harlyn Bay Padstow to join in the St Pirans  day festivities.

 

5th March – Redruth – St Piran’s Day Festival 

11.00am to 3.00pm – Redruth’s St Piran’s Day Festival is a celebration of the historic mining town and tin industry along with a showcase of Cornish culture. With a procession starting at 12PM at the Western end of Fore Street, choirs will lead the singing of Trelawney by the town clock at the end of the procession. Including street entertainment, live music and a craft fair.

 

5th March Falmouth, St Piran’s Day Parade 

10.00 to 11.40am – Local school children and musicians take part in a Furry Dance around Falmouth, open to all to join in or line the streets to watch the procession. Leaving from the Moor, Webber Street, High Street, Brewery Yard, Prince of Wales Pier and then walking through teh town to Church Corner, where the story of St Piran will be told.

 

5th March Truro – St Piran’s Day Parade 

1pm – Truro’s annual parade will leave St George’s Road tour Truro city.  A St Piran’s market will feature many aspects of craft work, Cornish food produce, cultural information and promotions. A marquee will be held at Lemon Quay from 10am – 4pm with music, dancing and other festivities on show.

 

6th March – Perranporth – St Piran’s Play

Held on the Sunday closest to St. Piran’s Day the play produced by the St Piran Trust, takes place in Perranporth. Hundreds gather to mark the arrival of St Piran to Cornish shores, walking across the dunes dress in black, white and gold, the colours of Cornwall, carrying the Cornish flag. Meeting at Piran Point, Perran Sands Holiday Park.

 

I know we shouldn’t talk about the weather but spring is here,  according to the BBC weather on line, Padstow area is going to be 11c all day and all night all over the weekend, sounds like spring to me.  Mind you we did have daffodils on the side of the roads here before Christmas but now we have acres of them and snowdrops even the bluebells are beginning to come up, it gives you energy just to see them.

We hope you can come and see our wonderful spring flowers and spend  some time at Yellow Sands, Harlyn Bay, Padstow in Cornwall soon.

Some of our customers have had trouble viewing the new  site, I spoke to the builders and they advise you to ctrl and F5 it brings it all up properly. I did it and  it worked for us.

Also the availability calendar is now up and running so we are all systems go.

Welcome to Yellow Sands new website with blog so we can keep you up to date with what’s going on at Yellow Sands and  around Cornwall.

Hello to all our regulars, Its booking season again at the moment and we are glad to be welcoming back so many of our guests who have been coming to Yellow Sands for a number of years, along with some new visitors who we hope will become regular guests too.

Its been a lot of siting at the computer for the last few weeks, I’m not good at sitting still so will be glad to start the painting of the apartments to keep them up to scratch, going to do the hall stairs and landing at home first, a tiny job compared to all the apartments and Sharmalyn house so best to get it out the way first.

We hope to get some comments from out regulars let us know how you are getting on.
